Buddy Program

Buddy and Mentor

Soledad Solis Angeles, a student and first-time meeting attendee, and Randy Wentsel, Exponent, SETAC Senior Resource Group Member, at a previous SETAC North America annual meeting.

The Buddy System matches meeting guides (i.e., seasoned SETAC members) with first-time and international attendees at SETAC North America annual meetings. The annual meeting, which provides a great opportunity for scientific discourse, increasing knowledge and networking, can be a challenge for first-time and international attendees. Please consider participating in the program as either a meeting guide or a first-time or international attendee. Meeting guides, we appreciate that you are willing to donate a small amount of your time that can make a big difference in welcoming another scientist and encouraging their involvement in our society.

How Do I Join the Program?

  1. If you are interested in participating in the Buddy System, please indicate this while registering for the meeting. The deadline to register for the Buddy System at SETAC Orlando is 19 September.
  2. In the fall, we will email you a link to a quick survey. The survey helps us pair meeting guides with first-time and international attendees based on similar research interests. If you do not complete the survey, it will be assumed that you are no longer interested in participating in the Buddy System program.
  3. Meeting guides and first-time and international attendees will be introduced via email by the end of October, so they can arrange a time to meet in person during the annual meeting. The time commitment can be as little as a couple of hours with flexibility to extend the contact.

Given the diverse research interests and backgrounds of SETAC members, successful matching is not always possible. In such cases, meeting guides can assist with finding sessions that might be of interest or by helping to connect first-time and international attendees with people that have similar interests or backgrounds.
